Surprised? Really no matter where you are in the US Twitter is a huge thing. Soon you will start seeing things like #trending everywhere! T.V. Networks like ESPN and Discovery have already starting using #hashtags for current programs. Watching the X games this year, the top Trending topics were #xgames and even #snowboardbigair.

For those of you I have lost, the use of the pound sign (#) before a word or phrase is called a hash tag. Hash tags are used to follow specific conversations within Twitter using the search function. A simple way to understand this is to go to Twitter (set up an account if you don’t have one, all you need is an email address), then go to the search box and type in #yourcity (yourcity = Your City) no spaces and then hit enter. If anyone is Tweeting about your city, the posts will show up there. All you need to do to join the conversation is do a post with the #yourcity tag in it… then it to will show up on this feed.

Small Business SEO, Local SEO Search Engine Optimization

If you learned absolutely nothing else about Twitter and using hash tags, you already know how to reach Millions of people! How? Well think about this, if you are trying to reach people in your city, make sure in every Tweet you put in the hash tag for your city. If you would like to target people following marketing trends, then you would use the tag #marketing. Combine the two into a single post and your are reaching people in your area that are following marketing.

So now you know how to get people to see your posts, now what? In order for you to really pull someone from Twitter, you need to first think up a GREAT headline (something that will grab peoples attention) put in the right hash tags and then include a link back to your site or a page you have created like a blog or something that is related to that headline. You only get 140 characters total so BE CREATIVE!

If you are posting great content, then people will follow you. The more people that follow you the more people will see ALL of your Tweets. (only people that follow you will get all of your Tweets in their feed)

So now you are Tweeting like someone in the know… reaching 100′s, 1,000′s or even 10,000′s of thousands with every Tweet… PLUS you are going to start building a following… Time to go PRO!

The next thing you need to know is who to follow. Now you can follow anyone you would like, however typically I try to follow people that I am targeting in my marketing efforts (in my case, Small Business Owners). Look at people profiles, and make a decisions as to who you wish to follow… look to see if they are Tweeting, see how many people are following them and how many they follow… These are all important things! If you are looking at a 20 something male, and your target demographic is 35 + this is not a person you should follow. Also, if they are not active or are following way more people than are following them, again probably not someone you should follow.

Some people will tell you to follow everyone, however I believe in being selective… in the long run your better off, and you don’t end up with a bunch of crap on your feed.

Moving on… Twitter is still Social Media, so if you are only pushing out information and not interacting with people, you are not going to be successful. Always remember, Social Media is Social! If the conversation is one sided, so will your results be.

When you see an interesting post, or click on a link to some information you find interesting, then you can re-tweet it. On Twitter this is one of the highest forms of flattery. If you simply copy the info an post it yourself, with out the re-Tweet (when you re-Tweet if gives props to the first person that Tweeted it.) then it will not have the same impact. When you re-Tweet something you find interesting, the person who’s post you re-tweeted will start to pay more attention to your feed and possibly start re-Tweeting your posts to all of their followers. In the end, this is FAR better. Re-Tweeting is simple, just click the re-tweet button.

You can also reply to a post and really start a conversation. Since most people Don’t do this, the reply button is extremely powerful. Nothing builds followers faster than interaction… Not only will this build followers, it will also increase your Tweet Creds… Interact enough, and you will become one of the people always pay attention to whenever you post.

I know this has been a lot of information and your head is spinning… just JUMP in with both feet and have fun with it!

One Last thing: Unlike any other Social Media Site out there, every Tweet you put up on Twitter is indexed by Google. The SEO Value of Twitter is MASSIVE! Make sure to link back to your site as often as possible, as it will definitely help your Google rankings.
